Position Purpose


To manage all Material functions for the flow of materials, from supplier through production to customer, ensuring maximum customer service, minimum inventory investment, minimum transportation costs and efficient plant operations.


Primary Accountabilities

  • Establish goals and objectives with plant staff.
  • Communicate cost savings initiatives and assign support for defined projects.
  • Drive continuous improvement through involvement with Lean Manufacturing projects.
  • Review department/plant measurables (customer delivery, supplier delivery, premium freight and inventory) and establish corrective measures for performance adherence.
  • Ensure customer requirements are met on a continual basis.
  • Provide leadership to subordinates for individual and group development.
  • Educate department on new customer standards to ensure Benteler Automotive meets and exceeds expectations.
  • Develops internal planning (transportation, run sizes, inventory balances, etc.) for new and existing product.
  • Standardize and follow best practices with all Materials/Logistics departments in the North American organization.
  • Manage supplier relationships to ensure delivery and quality requirements are met.
  • Oversee the material flow process.
  • Review cost improvement ideas and manage implementation, such as transportation costs, warehouse costs, etc.

Major Challenges

  • The major objectives of this position (maximum customer service, minimum inventory investment, minimum transportation costs and efficient plant operations) are usually in conflict.
  • The fluctuating demands from the customer.

Decision Making Authority

  • Makes decisions regarding inventory levels and sets goals for inventory and production.
  • Approves changes to transportation costs based on continuous improvement.
  • Recommends actions regarding business system improvements, supplier sourcing and logistic practices.
  • Determines appropriate staffing levels and overtime for departments within the budget.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials or related field.
  • Five years experience in Materials/Logistics with supervisory experience.
  • Previous scheduling, shipping/receiving, purchasing and inventory experience.                 .

Financial Dimensions

  • Responsible for the following budgets:  headcount, transportation, overtime, direct and indirect inventory.
