Core Responsibilities: 

  • Plans, lays-out and performs machining operations and bench work to construct, modify and repair fixtures, tools, dies, and gauges used in metal stamping manufacturing so that the resulting product meets customer quality requirements within the established production deadlines. 


Other goals include: 

  • Suggest, develop and implement solutions so as to improve overall tooling performance.
  • Suggest, develop and implement solutions so as to improve overall tooling performance. 
  • Troubleshoot dies; fix problems while dies running in presses.


Essential Duties: 

  • Organizes and determines work procedures and sequences; select materials, tools and processes in accordance with specifications and lays out project components for machining operations. Makes necessary computations and works from models, blueprints, drawings or other written or oral specifications.
  • Works with production personnel and quality engineers to resolve problems and die issues so that parts meet customer quality requirements and matches part print dimensions. 
  • Troubleshoots dies and tools such as hotstamp dies, transfer dies, progressive dies and special machines in order to provide maximum production up time. 
  • Communicates with other shifts (by the beginning of every shift) and coworkers to ensure correct transmission of information concerning progress of repairs/modifications and resolution of problems. 
  • Assess the job to determine what has to be done and reports to Shift Team Leader/Toolroom Manager what the needs are in order to get it done. Assigns tasks and offers directions to machinists. If no machinist is available, the Tool and Die Maker will follow the instructions of his/her Toolroom Manager/Shift Team Leader. 
  • Works with and instructs apprentices as required. 
  • Ensures that all details are the proper size and material. 
  • Applies trigonometry to set up, mill and grind compound angles. Uses advanced math to work roll pin checks and construction dimensions. 
  • Keeps track of all repairs and documents all repairs on the dies. 
  • Repairs and builds tools and dies within established deadlines and meeting established quality requirements. Able to complete tasks within time constraints. 
  • Keeps production work area neat and clean while performing repairs, preventative maintenance, etc. and cleans-up area before leaving when the job is completed. 
  • Will work at all times in accordance with OSHA and Benteler Automotive Safety requirements. 
  • During the last part check, gains information about the tool performance, documents this information on the DRO, and notes all necessary repairs on the DRO. 
  • Keeps Toolroom Manager/Shift Team Leader advised on the progress of dies and discusses problems as they develop. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Shift Team Leader and/or Toolroom Manager.

Qualification Requirements: 

  • Education: Journeyman/Certificate of Apprenticeship in Tool and Die 
  • Experience: Proficient in all machine operations: grinders, mills, drill presses, lathes and stamping presses. Understanding of the function of special equipment used in processing parts: CNC, jig bores, jig grinders. 
  • Experience with blanking, progressive and transfer dies. 


Physical Requirements: 

  • Work in a production environment 
  • Able to work any shift 
  • Able to stand up to 12 hours per day
