As an important member of a small dynamic regional legal team (and part of a larger international team), Legal Counsel will provide strategic legal support and guidance to Benteler management and business leaders on a broad range of legal matters, domestically and internationally. 


Your Opportunity

  • Draft and negotiate a variety of commercial agreements, including manufacturing, purchasing, development, supply and service agreements.
  • Ensure a timely and competent support in all legal matters, within the area of functional operational legal responsibility of the relevant region.  (“Relevant region” is North America; “functional operational legal responsibility” is an area of law to be selected based on the successful candidate’s background and area of expertise.)
  • Analyze and assess situations from an operational legal perspective and render opinions to management with respect to the legal implications of proposed actions.
  • Assist and support in operational business transactions, including M&As.
  • Review, draft and negotiate complex vendor, customer and employment-related contracts, including but not limited to commercial, sales, manufacturing, procurement, labor and employment.
  • Provide advice and support regarding corporate law and governance matters, including formation, maintenance, merger and dissolution of subsidiaries.
  • Provide advice and support regarding labor and employment issues, including drafting policies, procedures, agreements, independent contractor, employment and severance, responses to EEOC and DOL inquiries.
  • Provide advice and support for special projects and other matters as the need arises, and draft and negotiate agreements for such projects
  • Support the development and provides recommendations to company policies.
  • Work with representatives from various departments to ensure the development and implementation of global contract standards and policies that conform to legal requirements and adapts to local needs, if required.
  • Conduct and coordinate operational legal research and trainings in local regions.
  • Identify and monitor legislative changes and their implementation within the area of responsibility.
  • Prepare statistics on legal cases.


Your Chance

  • JD degree with a strong academic background.
  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan or licensed to practice law in a foreign jurisdiction with qualifications necessary to apply for a license in the state of Michigan. 
  • 3 - 5 years progressive professional legal experience with at least 2 years of substantive law firm experience.
  • Proven ability to establish strong cross-functional relationships at all levels and geographies. 
  • Ability to develop an innovative approach to legal issues in support of strategic business initiatives and objectives.
  • Creative problem-solving skills to assist in meeting business needs and seizing new opportunities while mitigating risk and managing key relationships.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills to balance competing priorities and manage workflow in a thoughtful and effective manner.
  • Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team to resolve complex matters.
  • Excellent leadership and collaboration skills.
  • Excellent writing, oral communication, analytical, organizational, and strategic thinking skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a global environment.  Prior experience working with international clients or experience traveling overseas (recreational or professional) is critical.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage a large volume of concurrent priorities.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • Experience in negotiating, reviewing, drafting and advising clients concerning legal requirements and risks to various complex agreements.
  • Experience in litigation, including managing litigation files, including pre-litigation counseling, fact finding, causal analysis and assessment of liability, case management including management of outside counsel.
  • Experience in corporate matters.
  • Experience with labor and employment services.
  • Experience in drafting and presenting training materials.
  • Work experience with legal issues affecting the automotive industry.
  • Work experience as in-house attorney at a large multinational company.
